Chicago, IL, May. 16 (UPI) -- Three Illinois congressmen heard testimony on federal funding of stem cell research as a Catholic poll indicated 52 percent of U.S. adults oppose funding.

Republicans Mark Kirk, Judy Biggert and Joe Schwarz listened to three patients and three scientists urging reform of President Bush's restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

Bush issued an executive order in 2001 limiting research funding to stems created before Aug. 9, 2002. At that time there were 72 stem lines, but the number has fallen to 20 viable lines.

"Stem cell research offers the greatest potential for curing Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and diabetes," said Kirk, who supports legislation (H.B. 810) to accelerate stem cell research.

A national poll commissioned by the U.S. Conference of Bishops found 52 percent of respondents opposed federal funding for human stem cell research while 36 percent supported more opportunities for research.

The telephone poll of 1,010 adults was conducted May 6-11 and had a 3 percent margin of error.
